U.S. Senators Pete Ricketts and Angus King have introduced the CARING for Our Veterans Health Act of 2025, a legislative proposal aimed at improving the tracking and sharing of medical documentation for veterans. The bill mandates that the Under Secretary for Health of the Department of Veterans Affairs implement guidelines to ensure proper tracking of medical records when veterans receive care from community providers.

Senator Ricketts emphasized the importance of this legislation by stating, “Our veterans deserve our utmost respect and gratitude… This bill will help establish guidelines and procedures for VA medical facilities to obtain medical documentation from community care providers.”

Senator King echoed these sentiments, highlighting the sacrifices made by veterans in Maine and nationwide. He stated, “The CARING for Our Veterans Health Act of 2025 would ensure that veterans have access to the best care by improving information-sharing between community care providers and VA medical centers.”

The legislation is supported by the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and aims to address gaps in systemwide visibility regarding whether medical documentation from community providers is received by VA centers. Approximately 75% of veterans return to VA medical centers after receiving services elsewhere, underscoring the need for efficient exchange of records.

As reliance on community care grows, this act seeks to establish clear expectations for tracking documentation and create monitoring goals to strengthen information exchange within the Office of Integrated Veteran Care.
