U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts paid tribute to John Gottschalk, former chairman and CEO of the Omaha World-Herald, on the Senate floor. Gottschalk passed away last month. Ricketts described him as an individual of integrity and courage who made significant contributions to journalism and the community.

Ricketts noted that Gottschalk was instrumental in leading the Omaha World-Herald into the digital age and improving technology across Nebraska. “He made the Omaha World-Herald a standard for how a newspaper should be run,” Ricketts stated.

Gottschalk’s journey began in Rushville, Nebraska, where he was born in 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska, majoring in political science and journalism. His career in journalism started at his father’s publication, the Sheridan County Star.

In 1972, Gottschalk purchased the Sidney Telegraph and became mayor of Sidney. By 1975, he joined the Omaha World-Herald as an assistant to the president and rose to become publisher and CEO by 1989 until his retirement in 2009.

Aside from his work in journalism, Gottschalk held leadership roles such as national president of the Boy Scouts of America and chairman for both Mid-America Council of Boy Scouts and Board of Governors for the USO. He also chaired the Omaha Performing Arts Center.

Ricketts highlighted Gottschalk’s dedication to community service alongside his wife Carmen, noting their efforts in fostering over 100 infants awaiting adoption. Describing him as a “renaissance man,” Ricketts praised Gottschalk’s contributions to business, conservation, and military support.

“John passed away last month, leaving a legacy that is having a lasting imprint on our community of Omaha,” said Ricketts.
