U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska has introduced legislation aimed at urging the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, collectively known as the E3, to initiate a snapback of United Nations sanctions on Iran. The proposed sanctions include export controls, travel bans, asset freezes, and other restrictions targeting those involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile activities. Bipartisan companion legislation has been introduced in the House by Representatives Claudia Tenney (R-NY-24) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ-05).

“Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism, and their actions have led to the murder of American servicemembers,” Senator Ricketts stated. He emphasized that Iran possessing a nuclear weapon would pose a threat to both U.S. security and that of its allies.

Representative Tenney highlighted that “Under the Biden administration, Iran grew more emboldened,” noting increased support for terrorist proxies alongside an expanding nuclear stockpile. She contrasted this with former President Trump’s approach: “President Trump has taken decisive action to counter Iran’s malign influence.”

Representative Gottheimer underscored concerns about lifted sanctions: “We cannot forget where the money ends up when sanctions are lifted on Iran.” He noted that these funds often support groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

The bill is co-sponsored by several Republican senators including John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Cornyn (R-TX), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Jim Justice (R-WV), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Tim Sheehy (R-MT), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Todd Young (R-IN).

Senator Ricketts announced this legislative effort during a conference call with media representatives from Nebraska.
