U.S. Senators Pete Ricketts and Deb Fischer have announced a federal grant of $5.4 million aimed at improving the Southeastern Nebraska Agricultural Supply Chain Efficiency Project. The funding will be directed to Manning Rail, Inc., with the purpose of rehabilitating a rail line between Fairmont and Burress in Fillmore County.

Senator Ricketts emphasized the significance of this initiative by stating, "Food security is national security so enhancing Nebraska’s agricultural supply chain is an important use of these funds." He added that restoring the rail line would boost competitiveness for over 100 local farmers, improve grain transportation efficiency, and enhance market access for local producers.

Senator Fischer highlighted the impact on rural infrastructure, noting, "Investing in infrastructure keeps rural Nebraska strong." She explained that rebuilding the rail line would connect more than 100 producers to global markets and position Fillmore County for future success.

Kent Manning, President of Manning Rail, expressed gratitude for the grant: "We are grateful and excited to have been awarded this grant because of the tremendous opportunity it offers regional producers." He recounted how his company had worked hard to restore the rail line since purchasing it two decades ago when its survival was uncertain. Manning pointed out that this funding would ensure safe and efficient grain transportation via rail and provide access to 110-car shuttle trains on the BNSF railroad for future generations.

The project will focus on development, final design, and construction activities necessary to restore the rail line. Both Manning Rail and Fillmore County will contribute a 25 percent non-Federal match. This project qualifies under statutory set-asides for rural area projects.
