This week, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) addressed Nebraska media during his weekly press call to discuss the One Big Beautiful Bill and its implications for national security and border protection.

"Lasting prosperity depends on lasting security," said Ricketts. "No nation can thrive without secure borders and a strong military. The One Big Beautiful Bill is the strongest national security and border security package in American history. This bill protects the good life in Nebraska."

Ricketts emphasized the challenges posed by illegal immigration, citing issues such as fentanyl trafficking and human trafficking affecting Nebraskans. He highlighted the tragic loss of young lives like Taryn Lee Griffith as an example of these consequences.

The senator criticized President Biden's administration for what he termed a "border crisis," noting 10.5 million illegal border encounters under Biden's oversight. He pointed out recent arrests of MS-13 gang members in Omaha as evidence of ongoing threats.

The proposed bill includes substantial investments in border security, with $46.5 billion allocated to complete the border wall system, $10 billion in grants to reimburse states for costs incurred due to federal failures, and $6.1 billion for surveillance tools.

Beyond border concerns, Ricketts stressed the importance of deterring foreign adversaries through military strength. Nebraska plays a crucial role with its airmen, missile programs, and military bases contributing to national defense.

The bill proposes over $150 billion in defense investments aimed at countering threats from countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. It also includes funding for missile defense systems, shipbuilding projects, Coast Guard enhancements, and advanced technology development.

For Nebraska specifically, Ricketts noted significant investments such as $2.5 billion tied to the Sentinel ICBM program based partly in Western Nebraska and $168 million for production acceleration at Offutt Air Force Base.

"The One Big Beautiful Bill keeps America secure and protects Nebraskans," Ricketts stated. "It honors the brave women and men who serve in uniform."
