Chadron State College announced on Mar. 19 that registration is now open for The Big Event, inviting both volunteers and community members in need of service assistance to participate.

The event provides an opportunity for students and staff to connect with the local community through various service projects. It aims to foster relationships between college members and residents while addressing practical needs in the area.

Adam Beard, a business major from Berthoud, Colorado, said, “I am excited for the day of The Big Event. Seeing the groundwork that we have put in during our weekly meetings, advertising, jobsite appraisals, and volunteer coordination will make the day of the event memorable.”

Jobsite applications are available to all community members who require help with tasks such as planting trees, picking up trash, painting fences, and general garden cleanup. For safety reasons, volunteers are not allowed to use power tools or ladders.

Staff member Emma Carfield of Treton, Nebraska reflected on her experience: “One of the most memorable jobsites she worked on in the past was raking leaves for an elderly citizen. Carfield said it felt special to build a connection between a long-time resident and college students, such as herself, even when helping with a simple task.”

The Big Event originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 and has since been adopted by 125 campuses nationwide. Chadron State College held its first event in 2013 and now serves around 50 jobsites each year.

Sign-up forms are available at csc.edu/thebigevent. Questions can be directed to Faculty Adviser Nicky McHugh at nmchugh@csc.edu or thebigevent@csc.edu.
