The results of the Western District History Day contest were announced on March 11, with high-quality entries and all competitors advancing to the state level, according to Dr. Sam Herley, Chadron State College Assistant Professor of History and coordinator of the contest.
The event highlighted student achievement in historical research and presentation across several categories. Dr. Herley said he was pleased with the standard of work submitted by participants and noted that every competitor will have an opportunity to compete at the next stage.
A group of third grade students from Crawford participated by displaying exhibits and received participation awards for their efforts. Their teacher is Brennann Jackson, a Chadron State College alum.
In the senior individual documentary category, Teague Edelman of Crawford won first place with “The Boat that Won the War in the Pacific.” Lela Johnson of Crawford took first place in junior individual documentary for “The Revolutionary Idea That Conquered the Dust Bowl.” The senior group exhibit award went to Miranda Betson and Garett Tollman of Crawford for “Reformation of the Beef Industry,” while Isabella Winters of Chadron won junior individual exhibit with “Opium’s Deadly Causes.”
Other notable winners included Emily Roberts and James Roberts of Chadron for their junior group exhibit “Guillotine,” as well as Fox Crofutt of Chadron who placed first in junior individual papers with “The Lusitania.” Additional awards recognized achievements in military history and Great Plains studies.
