Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts announced new legislation aimed at urging European allies to initiate the snapback of United Nations sanctions on Iran. The announcement was made during a conference call with Nebraska media.
Senator Ricketts stated, “Recently, President Trump took executive action to restore maximum pressure against Iran. He directed the Treasury and State Departments to try and drive Iran’s oil exports to zero – which will stop their ability to fund terrorism.” He added that President Trump has also instructed the UN Ambassador to encourage allies to complete the snapback of sanctions and restrictions on Iran.
Ricketts emphasized the importance of international cooperation, saying, “President Trump’s actions will make our country safer. But he can’t do it alone. Our allies, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, also known as the E3, will need to do the same.”
The proposed legislation would push European allies towards implementing snapback sanctions on Iran. These measures would include export controls, travel bans, asset freezes, and other restrictions targeting those involved in Iranian nuclear and missile activities.
Ricketts concluded by underscoring the urgency of collective action: “My legislation would deliver a strong message to our European allies: they need to step up. Iran’s possession of a nuclear weapon would threaten our security and the security of our allies. Snapback sanctions are key to ensuring that President Trump’s maximum pressure policy is successful.”
